About this guide
Updated November 4, 2026
This guide explains how Canadian income tax works in plain English. It is written for employees, freelancers, investors, retirees and business owners who want to understand their taxes without an accounting degree.
What it covers
Unless a page says otherwise, figures are for the 2026 tax year, which is the return most people file in spring 2027. Federal amounts come from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Each province and territory also has its own tax rates and credits.
How to use it
Each topic has its own page. You can read in order, because the chapters follow the shape of a tax return, or use the search box to go straight to what you need.
This guide is general education. It is not tax, legal or financial advice for your situation. Tax rules change, and small details can change the answer, so speak with a professional before making a decision with real money involved.
Living in Quebec?
Quebec residents file two returns: a federal return with the CRA and a provincial return with Revenu Québec. Most federal rules here still apply, but Quebec has its own credits, rates and payroll programs.
