Tax Guide/Self-employed
Gig work and online platforms
Updated November 4, 2026
Income from gig work is taxable, whether it comes from delivery, ridesharing, freelancing, short-term rentals or selling online.
What is different
- Platforms report to the CRA: many digital platforms must report seller income, so the CRA may already have your numbers.
- Rideshare drivers must register for GST/HST from their first dollar, even under $30,000.
- Expenses: you can claim costs such as vehicle use, phone and platform fees, with records.
- Payments may be net: report your gross revenue, then claim the fees as an expense.
Occasional sales of your own used items are often not business income. A regular activity aimed at profit usually is.
