Tax Guide/Life events

First jobs and students

Updated November 4, 2026

Even if you earned little, filing is often worth it. It can refund tax withheld, build RRSP room and start benefits like the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit once you turn 19.

Quick checklist

  • Complete Form TD1 when you start a job, so the right amount is withheld.
  • Create a CRA My Account.
  • Report all income, including tips and cash work.
  • Claim tuition from Form T2202, and keep unused amounts.
  • Consider opening a TFSA at 18 or 19, depending on your province's age of majority. Your room begins the year you turn 18.
  • Open an FHSA once you are 18 if a first home is a goal.
