Tax Guide/Self-employed
CPP for the self-employed
Updated November 4, 2026
As an employee, your employer pays half of your CPP. When self-employed, you pay both halves when you file.
| 2026 | Rate | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| CPP on net income from $3,500 to $74,600 | 11.9% | $8,460.90 |
| CPP2 on net income from $74,600 to $85,000 | 8% | $832 |
This is in addition to income tax, and it surprises many people in their first year. It is calculated on Schedule 8, and part of it gives you a deduction and part a credit.
EI is optional for the self-employed, but you can opt in for special benefits such as parental and sickness benefits.
