Disability tax credit
Updated November 4, 2026
The disability tax credit helps people with a severe and prolonged impairment. For 2026, the federal amount is $10,341, worth about $1,448. A child can add a supplement of up to $6,032.
How to apply
A medical practitioner certifies Form T2201, and the CRA must approve it. You can apply digitally or by mail.
Why it matters
- Unused amounts can transfer to a spouse or supporting relative.
- Approval can unlock the Child Disability Benefit, the Registered Disability Savings Plan and the Canada Disability Benefit.
- If you qualified in past years, you can ask to have those returns adjusted.
