Home buyers' amount

Updated November 4, 2026

First-time buyers can claim up to $10,000 on line 31270. At the 2026 rate of 14%, this reduces federal tax by up to $1,400.

You generally qualify if you bought a qualifying home and did not live in another home owned by you or your spouse in that year or the previous four years.

Couples may split the claim, but the total cannot exceed $10,000. People eligible for the disability amount have a separate rule when buying a more accessible home.
