Tax Guide/Filing and paying

If you cannot pay your taxes

Updated November 4, 2026

  1. File on time anyway. This avoids a late-filing penalty.
  2. Pay what you can. Every dollar paid reduces future interest.
  3. Contact the CRA first. Ask about a payment arrangement before it starts collection action.
  4. Consider relief. If hardship or events beyond your control caused the problem, you can request taxpayer relief.

The CRA can take serious steps with unpaid debts, including withholding refunds or garnishing wages. Ignoring the debt makes those steps more likely. Interest continues during a payment arrangement.
